Volunteers needed to plan Alzheimer’s walk

BREMERTON – The Alzheimer’s Association Washington State Chapter is looking for volunteers to help plan the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Bremerton.

This year’s event is planned for Sept. 8 at the Louis Mentor Boardwalk.

Volunteers are asked to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Planning Committee, which helps organize the event by recruiting new teams, marketing the event in the community and securing sponsorships. Committee members also help with event production and logistics.

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the third largest event of its kind in the country. Last year, more than 350 people participated in the Bremerton Walk, raising $57,800. Funds raised for the event are used for Alzheimer’s research and to provide care and support for local families impacted by the disease.

In Washington state, there are more than 110,000 people living with Alzheimer’s disease and another 340,000 unpaid caregivers providing their support. It is the third leading cause of death in Washington state and the only one in the top 10 diseases without a way to prevent, cure or even slow its progression.
