Update: Washington State Ferries expects the Wenatchee back in service on the Bainbridge/Seattle route Friday afternoon.

The Hyak will return to the Bremerton/Seattle route in time for a 4:20 p.m. departure from Seattle, according to a WSF press release. The Puyallup shift back to its regular Kingston/Edmonds route.

The ferry Wenatchee crashed into Colman Dock in Seattle Sunday morning, at the end of its 10:25 sailing from Bainbridge Island. The impact of the crash damaged the bow of the ferry and the dock slip.

Bainbridge Islander Gary Pettersen was on the Wenatchee when it hit the dock. He said there was a substantial amount of fog at the time, which might have contributed to the accident.

“I heard a large crunching sound and felt the whole boat shake,” Pettersen said. “Then all of a sudden (the captan) threw the engines in reverse and we pulled back from the dock.”

Several minutes later Pettersen said there was an announcement asking if there was a doctor onboard the vessel. One minor injury was reported.

Wenatchee was taken to Todd Pacific Shipyards for repairs this week. WSF and the U.S. Coast Guard are investigating the cause of the crash. The investigation is expected to take a month.

Following the crash Sunday, the 144-car Hyak was pulled from the Bremerton route to restore two-boat service on the Bainbridge run Sunday afternoon. Then overnight, WSF moved the 202-car Puyallup from the Kingston/Edmonds route to the Bainbridge route in exchange for the Hyak.

The move reduced capacity on the Kingston/Edmonds route by 58 vehicles this week.

The Bremerton route operated with one ferry Monday, when its service was supplemented with two, 149-foot passenger ferries.
