West Sound Treatment Center of Port Orchard is working to raise $100,000 in community donations through its Build a Bridge 2016 campaign, the agency said April 5.
West Sound was established 30 years ago to provide substance abuse and alcohol treatment services to the South Kitsap community. The agency later added a second treatment facility in Poulsbo, three adult housing programs in Bremerton, and a job-skills development program called Compass. The agency was the first in the county to develop a family housing program for recovering mothers and their children — called O’Hana House — and recently launched New Start, the county’s first in-jail treatment and transition program.
The fundraising effort was necessitated by the agency’s increased costs and narrowing cash flow. West Sound’s board president, Susan Thoman, said that local and governmental grants are decreasing, but service demands continue to grow, necessitating waiting lists for housing and limiting staffing for ongoing behavioral services needs.
“Our programs have grown over 300 percent since 2007, and most people are unaware that the agency provides behavioral services and support to over 3,000 individuals and families in Kitsap County each year,” Thoman said.
“With the expansion in programs, we have experienced some serious organizational and financial challenges. We must now count on the goodwill of the community to help us bridge these challenges to create a hopeful future for our clients, our programs and this community.”
