Did you recognize this vessel behind glass? Chances are good that anyone who’s ever visited Port Orchard City Hall has seen it in the second-floor lobby, across from the City Clerk’s office.
The model ship is a replica of the SS Virginia V, which was a 110-foot passenger steamer that was built in 1922 at Maplewood, a shipyard that was near Olalla. The model is on loan to the Northwest Mosquito Fleet Society from its owner, Robert Whitney of Bremerton.
It has been on display in City Hall since the building opened in 2000, except for a period of about six months a few years ago when it was temporarily moved elsewhere, city staff said.
