Did you recognize this guy?

He’s Colby, an alpaca that can usually be seen in a fenced field by the corner of SE Olympiad Drive and Bean Road in Southworth.

His owners, Bruce and Janie Hinds, said 11-year-old Colby is named for a late friend of theirs from Colby United Methodist Church.

The couple originally brought home two alpacas, but Colby’s buddy Cody died of an illness last fall.

“Since they are herd animals, they should really have some pals,” Bruce Hinds said.

So the family dog sometimes fills in as Colby’s playmate, romping around with him in the pasture belonging to the Hinds’ neighbors who care for Colby when they’re out of town.

“Their sheep had passed away and they needed their pasture ‘mowed’ so Colby and Cody to the rescue,” Janie Hinds said.

She said alpacas have a life span of 25 to 30 years, so hopefull Colby will be around for a lot more visits from grandkids.
