City Councilman Jim Henry. You gotta love this guy. He thinks big. Jim’s a fella whose time on council has been marked by attempts to improve the way residents in Poulsbo and beyond get from Point A to Point B. He realizes that no matter how much telecommuting will change the face of Kitsap County, there will always be those who have to hop in their cars to get to work.
A few years back, he pulled enough interest to book a passenger-only boat from the Poulsbo Marina to Seattle. The initial voyage was well-received but the idea of reviving the Mosquito Fleet still lacks the financial steam to make it go.
Will Jim’s proposal to run a monorail from Olhava to Winslow take a similar path? With a hefty price tag of $14 million to $56 million, to skeptics, it would seem likely.
But that’s no reason to run this one off the track.
While the idea of a monorail zipping through the city at 80 mph might have seemed like a “Buck Rogers” concept years ago, today such amenities are certainly plausible.
In this case, though, they are also very spendy and in the aftermath of Initiative 695, funding for state-assisted projects is still extremely competitive. Given the size of the city and the population of the surrounding areas, it will definitely be needed, though.
Still, it’s important to note that transportation and traffic issues won’t be a thing of the past in the future. Jim shows forward thinking in this regard and seems to realize that the only thing worse than not dreaming is not trying.
