The woman who found a young female cat that was soaked in flammable liquid, bound with electrical tape and burned, has adopted the animal.

According to Dr. Mike Alberts, the owner of Cedar Creek Animal Clinic, the woman found the feline about 8:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in a flowerbed in the Orchard Heights neighborhood.

The woman’s neighbor, who works at Cedar Creek Animal Clinic, brought the cat in for treatment.

Alberts said the woman wants to remain anonymous.

He said the cat is responding to treatment and could be released later this week or early next week.

Alberts said Tuesday the cat is healing and will remain in the animal clinic a few more days.

“When we got the cat, it was severely hypothermic and it took about four hours to register a body temperature,” Alberts said. “The cat is doing really well.”

The cat lost part of both ears and suffered an injury to its right eye.

“We want to make sure the eye is okay without any complications,” Alberts said.

The Kitsap Humane Society animal welfare division headed up an investigation on the incident.

Kelly Michaels, director of marketing for KHS, said Tuesday that the humane society conducted an investigation, but no one in the neighborhood claimed the cat or recalls seeing anyone in the area.

Anyone convicted of animal cruelty could face five years in jail and up to a $10,000 fine.
