KINGSTON — An elderly gentleman was struck by a car and killed Thursday evening while walking along Jefferson Point Road. The man, whose name is being withheld upon notification of next of kin, was walking northbound when he was hit by a white 1990 four-door Geo Prizm, which was also traveling northbound, according to Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Scott Wilson.

Traffic investigators believe the man was out for a walk as he was dressed in cold-weather clothing and carrying a water bottle. His age is estimated to be 80-85, Wilson said. The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

The 911 dispatch center received several calls regarding the accident and sent traffic investigators to the scene. Before they arrived, an off-duty nurse, whose name was not released, reportedly stopped to offer assistance to the victim.

“Based on everything, it looked like the man was walking in the roadway, even though he was found on the shoulder,” Wilson said. “After the impact, the vehicle stopped, backed up and left again at a high rate of speed,” Wilson said.

A group of traffic accident investigators gathered what Wilson called “substantial” evidence at the scene.

Investigators didn’t have to wait long to piece together what happened.

“There was a major break in the case, when a third party came into the Kingston office and said ‘I think I’ve been in a serious accident,” Wilson said.

That third party was a 39-year-old woman officials now believe was behind the wheel of the Prizm. Sheriff’s deputies located her car parked off Miller Bay Road between Indianola Road and Arness Sand Pit, Wilson said.

During the course of questioning, she requested an attorney. She was to make a court appearance at 3 p.m. Friday on charges of a fatality hit and run. As of press time, she was being held on $25,000 bail.
