A 42-year-old Bremerton woman was charged with reckless driving and driving while license revoked in the first degree after she sped 100 mph past a Bremerton Police officer and crashed her Lexus sedan into some trees at 11:13 p.m. March 5.
According to court documents, the woman sped past the officer eastbound on Kitsap Way near Lakehurst Drive at about 100 mph, where the speed limit is 35 mph. A moment later, the car spun out of control and crashed down an embankment and into some trees.
“I yelled out asking if anyone could hear me or was hurt. I could see a female’s hand waving through the open sunroof,” the officer wrote.
The woman was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was smoking a cigarette as rescuers arrived. The woman made nonsensical comments and giggled. A firefighter had to take her cigarettes from her because of a fire risk from leaking fuel. A records check showed the woman had a suspended license and a felony warrant for escape.
A Washington State Patrol trooper smelled marijuana coming from the woman and charged her with DUI. The woman refused to take a sobriety test and would not acknowledge the presence of the trooper.
“I advised (the woman) that she was under arrest for DUI. (The woman) suddenly became responsive, squinted her eyes at me and cantankerously asked how she could be under arrest,” the trooper wrote. A warrant was acquired to take a blood sample.
