KINGSTON — Martha & Mary breaks ground on its newest independent-living senior housing, Martha & Mary Village Green Apartments, Aug. 9 at 10 a.m. at Kingston Village Green.
“We are excited about this affordable senior housing project because it’s such a good fit with our mission,” Martha & Mary CEO Chad Solvie said in a press release. “This will be a fantastic new facility for Kingston, and it’s a natural extension of Martha & Mary’s 120-year heritage. We’re here to meet the evolving needs of Kitsap families.”
To make this campus possible, Martha & Mary partnered with Shelter Resources, Inc., of Bellevue to create a joint venture called Village Green Kingston Associates, LLLP. This organization entered into a competitive process in 2011 and secured more than $7 million in tax credits. Tax credits comprising the majority of the project’s funding helped leverage support from USDA, the HOME program, and 2060 funding.
County Commissioner Rob Gelder said the senior housing construction sets the momentum for the larger Village Green site plan. “The infrastructure work being done at this time will allow for a more efficient development of the eventual community center, which is targeting spring of 2013 for its own groundbreaking milestone,” Gelder said in a press release. “I’m so proud of the grassroots enthusiasm that the Kingston community has demonstrated with the Village Green plan. They have had both perseverance and vision, and it’s a testament to what’s possible when many stakeholders rally around a common cause.”
Martha & Mary’s Village Green Apartments will include 35 affordable senior-housing units for adults age 62 and older. Plans include 24 one-bedroom and 11 two-bedroom apartments ranging from 610 to 810 square feet. The project timeline estimates that residents will be able to move in as early as the fall 2013, with rent and utilities for the units ranging from $685-$890. People interested in becoming a tenant should call Guardian Management, (425) 423-0304.
With more than 600 employees, Martha & Mary provides comprehensive senior housing and health care services in Kitsap County. It has served the Kitsap Peninsula for more than 120 years. The Health and Rehab Center in Poulsbo provides short-term rehabilitation programs as well as traditional long-term care services. The campus is part of the family of services that Martha & Mary offers, including Home Care, Care Management, Short-term Rehabilitation, Long-term Care, Senior Housing and Children’s Programs.
Village Green Foundation and the Village Green Metropolitan Park District are alike in focusing their missions on the same public park and replacement community center — senior center, library, and Boys & Girls Club in Kingston. The foundation is a non-profit whose role is to design, finance and build the community center. Cooperatively, it will oversee building and park use. The park district is a public taxing district created to secure and administer funding to operate the park and community center.
