The wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene after his car collided with a pickup three miles east of Port Orchard on State Highway 16 about 10 p.m. on May 22, reported the Washington State Patrol.

KOMO 4 News reported the man killed in the crash was Delfin Ignacio, a 45-year-old competitive body builder from Tacoma. A check of court records showed that he had been arrested for drunk driving twice before, in 2003 and 2009.

Troopers reported they received a call about a possible drunk driver — in a 1998 Ford Escort ZX2 —  who was driving erratically on the highway. The driver was reported traveling west on the highway, then made U-turn and headed east on westbound SH 16. The car struck a 2000 Chevrolet truck before the Mullenix exit ramp.

It South Kitsap Fire and Rescue emergency personnel about 10 minutes  to extricate the driver of the truck, according to SKFR Captain Nathan Post.

The truck’s driver, Anthony Swinsinski, was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma. He suffered a shattered ankle, reported KOMO.

Westbound lanes on the highway were blocked for more than three hours and alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

Post reported than six SKFR units and 12 personnel responded to the crash.
