Alice S. Vaa

Alice Sophia Vaa of Poulsbo died April 30. She was 90.

Vaa was born to Jacob and Mathilda (Monson) Swalling on April 21,1913 in Dixon, Mont.

Vaa married Lawrence E. Vaa in May 1940 in Silverdale.

Vaa graduated as class valedictorian in 1932 from North Kitsap High School. She attended Western Washington University in Bellingham, where she received her teacher’s degree. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority.

Vaa worked as a teacher in the North Kitsap School District for 34 years until her retirement in 1971.

She was active in the Poulsbo Senior Center, the Retired Teacher’s Association and she enjoyed gardening. She was an active member of Vinland Lutheran Church in Poulsbo since 1928. She had been superintendent of the Sunday School there.

Vaa is survived by son Allen Vaa of Poulsbo; daughter Arlene Swift of Poulsbo; brothers Albert Swalling of Anchorage, Alaska, Ernie Swalling of Anchorage, Alaska, and Edwin Swalling of Auburn; sister Ellen Lindstrom of Seattle; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Vaa was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence E. Vaa; and brothers Oscar, Sander, Arthur, Adolph and Jacob Swalling.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. May 10 at Breidablik Cemetery. Services will be held at noon May 10 at Vinland Lutheran Church. Memorial donations can be sent to Vinland Lutheran Church “Scholarship Fund” or “Building Fund,” 2750 Finn Hill Rd. NE, Poulsbo, WA 98370.
