Arthur A. Mikkola
Oct. 29, 1913 — Aug. 18, 2014
Arthur A. Mikkola was born to Finnish immigrant parents, Johan Gust and Maria Sophia (Haapasalmi) Mikkola, in Melbourne, Florida on Oct. 29, 1913.
The family moved in 1916 to Washington state, where Art’s dad worked as an engineer and mechanic in logging. The family lived in various logging camps and Seattle before moving to Scandia. In 1919, the family moved to the family farm in Finn Hollow on Bainbridge Island. In fall 1928, Art was a member of the first freshman class of the new, all-island public high school, Bainbridge High School, and graduated in 1932.
Art married his wife Vendla in 1944 and they had one child, Marilyn. Art worked as a welder for U.S. Civil Service until his retirement. He and Ven moved to Port Orchard in 1993 to be closer to their daughter.
They enjoyed many years of travels and cruises throughout the world, including a lengthy stay visiting family in Finland and Sweden. In later years, they enjoyed Jansen Tours, with Reno being a favorite destination.
Art is survived by his daughter, Marilyn (Bill) Crawford; grandson, Matt Crawford; granddaughter, Beth (Jonathan) Cooper; and great-granddaughter, Madeline Cooper, all of Port Orchard.
Ven predeceased Art in death in 2008.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bainbridge Historical Society.
