Charles ‘Bill’ Roe, 83
Former Hansville resident, Charles “Bill” William Roe died Sept. 16, 2004 in Olympia. He was 83.
He was born in Buffalo, NY on Feb. 5, 1921 to Henry Preston and Marie Louise (Boulton) Roe.
Roe graduated from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario with a degree in metallurgical engineering. He later attended officers’ training at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. and entered the Navy. He served in the Pacific fleet during World War II, being discharged in 1946.
He married Barbara Jean Wood of Burlingame Calif. shortly thereafter.
Roe worked at International Nickel in Port Colburn, Ontario, Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore, Md. and in Burns Harbor, Ind. where he retired as assistant general manager in 1983.
He and his wife moved to Hansville and later to Bainbridge Island. In June 2004, they moved to Panorama City in Lacey.
Roe is survived by his wife, Barbara Roe of Lacey; son James Preston Roe of Seattle; daughter Barbara Christine Roe of Seattle; brother John Roe of Plantation, Fla.; and one grandchild.
Memorial services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 24 at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church on Bainbridge Island. Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.
Elaine Trostad, 81
Elaine Trostad of Poulsbo died Sept. 16, 2004 in Poulsbo. She was 81.
Trostad was born to Martin and Florence (Warner) Ellefson in Duluth, Minn. on June 3, 1923.
She married Rodney Clarence Trostad on April 15, 1944. After his death, she married Norman Trostad in April 2002.
Trostad graduated from Roosevelt High School in Seattle in 1941.
She worked as civilian personnel director at the Naval Hospital at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton and at the Trident Submarine Base in Bangor. Prior to her death, she was secretary at Christ the King Academy in Poulsbo for five years.
Trostad was proud of her Christian faith and her Norwegian-Swedish heritage. She leaves behind many friends at Christ Memorial Church in Poulsbo. She was known for her quiet, hospitable and supportive nature and for visiting the sick and homebound. She loved playing baseball and threw a mean pitch well into her 40s. She also enjoyed attending sporting events with friends and family. She made four trips to Scandinavian countries and also enjoyed traveling to visit friends and family.
Trostad is survived by her husband Norman T. Trostad of Poulsbo; sons Rob (Kathi) Trostad of Poulsbo, Merle (Karen) Trostad of Poulsbo and Jim (Rhonda) Trostad of Long Beach, Calif.; daughter Cheryl (Kim) Hansen of Seattle; brother Lyle Ellefson; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband Rodney Clarence Trostad.
A memorial service was held on Sept. 20 at Christ Memorial Church in Poulsbo. A graveside service followed at Evergreen Washelli Cemetery in Seattle.
