Charles F. “Charlie” Rose, 61
Charles F. “Charlie” Rose died Feb. 17 in Tucson, Ariz. The long-time North Kitsap High School teacher and coach was 61.
Rose was born to John and Betty Rose in Salmon, Idaho, on Dec. 25, 1946. A graduate of Brigham Young University, he worked at NKHS for 19 years, teaching math and health and coaching track and cross country. He later earned a master’s degree in his field.
Rose was a decorated Navy veteran, serving with the Fleet Marine Force in Vietnam, Okinawa, the Phillipines and at the MCB Camp Pendleton, Calif. He joined the Navy in 1965 and, after completing his active duty requirements, served an additional 20 years in the U.S. Naval Reserve, retiring in 1991 as a Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman (E-8). He had recently published a book of his early military experiences entitled “Corpsman Up” by Charlie “Doc” Rose.
An avid sportsman, he studied Aikido and other martial arts disciplines, and achieved a fourth-degree black belt. He was also passionate about golf and loved coaching, camping and other outdoor activities.
Rose is survived by his wife Cotah of Tucson, Ariz., three adult children (with previous wife Jean Rose): Sarah Nelsen (Scott), Christopher Rose of Suquamish and Emily Rose of Suqamish and two sisters, Willa Rose Shryne of Orting and Patricia Rose Clayton of Seattle. He is also survived by grandsons Aden, Conner and Bryce of Sandy, Utah and Garret Rose of Lopez Island, as well as nieces Mona and Christina.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. March 15 in Poulsbo at the LDS (Mormon) Ward Building on Mesford Road. Immediately following the ceremony, the public is invited to a “Remembering Charlie” reception at the Poulsbo Middle School Library. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any donations to be made to the American Heart Association and “The Smile Train.”
