Donald Elken Sarles of Poulsbo died Dec. 3. He was 76.
Sarles was born in Hillsboro, N.D., on Nov., 25, 1933 to Lynn Redmon Sarles and Clara Elken Sarles. After moving to California he graduated from Berkeley High in 1951, and University of California at Berkeley with a bachelor’s in business. He served two years in the Army and was stationed at Fort Lewis.
He married Barbara Jean Beckett in Berkeley, Calif. After working for Kaiser Permanente Cement they lived and worked in Berlin, Germany, and Benghazi, Libya in aviation. He later worked in California and New Mexico for Kaiser Steel and then Salem, Ore., where he had a tax practice. After moving to Washington, he worked for and retired from Washington State Ferries.
Sarles is survived by his wife Barbara; son Michael of Panguitch, Utah; daughter Kristine of Portland, Ore.; daughter-in-law Lucy; brother Lynn R. (Lucy) Sarles of Oregon; and grandchildren Josiah, Miranda, Nathaniel, Elise and Gabriel Donald. He was preceded in death by sisters Marian, Dorothy and Eleanor.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Dec. 12 in the Poulsbo City Cemetery on Caldart Avenue. Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Kitsap County.
