Edward Everett Thompson
June 26, 1940 – August 5, 2016
Longtime Bainbridge English teacher and poet Everett Thompson passed away unexpectedly at his Island home on August 5th.
Everett was born on June 26th, 1940 in North Carolina, to parents Arthur and Frances Thompson. He graduated from Duke University before joining the Army and relocating to the Pacific Northwest. Following his service, he attended the University of Puget Sound where he received his Masters in English, and then began a long teaching career at Bainbridge High School.
While at BHS, he served for many years as the yearbook advisor, and, later in his career, was instrumental in developing the American Studies program.
He loved American literature and music of all types, particularly the folk music of Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger.
In retirement, he returned to writing poetry, and was active in local poetry groups and readings. He also volunteered at the Bainbridge Island Historical Museum, and along with his wife, Nancy Rekow, published various books through their NW Trillium Press.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Art and Leo Thompson. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Rekow; his sister, Betty Blount; and his children Matt and Jennifer Thompson, and John and Duncan Newland-Thompson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bainbridge Island Historical Society. Arrangements are under the care of Cook Family Funeral Home.
