Elouise, age 96, longtime resident of Renton, WA (60 years) died March 15 at 7:10 PM. Born in West Seattle to Vera and Domenick Carle. Descended from Andresen (granddaughter of) and Sutter pioneer families of Bainbridge Island.
Attended Jefferson Grade School, James Madison Middle School, and West Seattle High School. Grew up in the family businesses, Carle’s Furs and Pacific Dye Works.
Served in the Waves (Navy) during WWII and trained as a nurse until mastoid interfered with training. While in New York, the war ended but instead of celebrating in Times Square, she went back to sleep.
After the Waves, worked various jobs. On July 13, 1947, married Earl Garfield Nix at West Seattle Christian Church. Became a homemaker and raised 4 children.
Home was filled with musical instruments including piano, organ, mandolins, guitar, cello, violins, and an accordion.
Hobbies included oil painting, drawing, spinning wool, knitting, baking bread, making pasta, gardening, singing, playing mandolin and guitar, and genealogy. Won many awards at various art shows.
Owned part of grandparents’ Bainbridge homestead along Tolo Road and kept it for many years. With her kids, regularly decorated the graves of relatives and said no one should be forgotten.
Elouise was mentally sharp and an encyclopedia of family history. She leaves behind 4 children, 5 grandchildren, niece, nephew, others. Her passing leaves a hole in our hearts.
