Frances Morton Sager, formerly of Keyport and Silverdale, died Aug. 28 in Bellingham following a prolonged illness. She was 91.
She was born Jan. 5, 1918, in Potter, Neb., to Jesse and Alice (Davis) Hoadley. Morton Sager was raised in Cheyenne, Wyo., and in Spokane and Edwall, graduating from Edwall High School and attending two years of teachers’ college in Cheney before marrying Gerald Morton in 1938. Before long the couple moved to Kitsap County for employment at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as the country prepared for entry into World War II.
Following Morton’s military discharge when the war ended in 1946, the couple bought their first and only home — a waterfront cabin in Keyport. Over time the cabin was remodeled and expanded into the home where Morton Sager remained for 57 years. Morton died in 1953 and Sager raised their three girls alone, working at Keyport Naval Torpedo Station from 1954 until her retirement in 1973. In 1968 Morton Sager married Albert Sager, and the couple enjoyed fishing and boating throughout Puget Sound, Hood Canal and the San Juan Islands. Albert Sager died in 1979 and Morton Sager lived alone for the remainder of her life.
Morton Sager was a long-standing active member of the Keyport Bible Church until she sold her home in 2003 and moved to Crista Shores in Silverdale. She enjoyed crafts and handwork, especially crochet. She contributed countless newborn hats and at least 150 baby afghans to Pregnancy Care. She became known in the Keyport area for her boysenberry pies. Morton Sager moved to Bellingham a year ago to be near family.
Morton Sager was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; her sister, Ruth Woods; and brother, John Hoadley; as well as her first-born child, a son, Larry Morton, who died at 6 months. She is survived by her daughters: Linda Kinney of Lummi Island, Judy Roberts of Seattle and Lummi Island, and Jeanne Poff of Coulee City; her sons-in-law: Fred Kinney and Dixon Poff; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
There will be no organized services.
