Gurvis Arthur Alness of Poulsbo died Oct. 23, 2003 in Bremerton. He was 87.

Alness was born to Gustav and Oleanna (Undheim) Alness in Poulsbo on Jan. 17, 1916.

He married Marie L. Hollingsworth in March 1948 in Bremerton.

Alness graduated from North Kitsap High School in 1934.

He worked at the Port Gamble Mill, Bangor, PSNS and was an off and on farmer who raised strawberries and flowers.

Alness enjoyed fishing, flowers, raising strawberries and cats. He was a Lutheran.

Alness is survived by his sons Ronald Alness and Richard Alness both of Poulsbo and sisters Alice Shank of Kirkland and Gladys Yoder of Lake Tapps.

He was preceded in death by his wife Marie L. (Hollingsworth) Alness.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Stone Chapel at Cherry Grove in Poulsbo.
