Harold (Ike) Culbertson

Harold (Ike) Culbertson

Harold (Ike) Purl Culbertson was born Dec. 10, 1924, in Sumatra, Montana. He was nicknamed Ike when he was a boy. Ike suffered a heart attack and passed away on Jan. 19, 2015, at the age of 90, surrounded by his caring family. He was preceded in death by his mother Harriet Matilda (Froehlich) and his father Oscar Purl Culbertson. His loving wife Valborg (Andersen) was born in Denmark and, after 50 years of marriage to Ike, she died in 2001.

Ike joined the Navy in 1943 and served during WWII and the Korean war. He retired from the Navy as a Boiler Technician Master Chief Petty Officer. He then worked as a boiler operator for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyards. He retired in 1980, then worked for Harrison Hospital as a Power Plant Foreman. Val also worked there for 22 years as a nurse.

He is survived by his cousin Gwen Meyers, 90, and her children Richard Meyers and Maureen (Meyers) VanderPas. Ike previously had a heart attack in 2010, so he moved to an apt at the GenCare Lodge in Renton near his family, and continued to play cards with his new friends.

Ike and Val were both active members of the Bremerton Elks #1181, the American Legion Post #68, and the Sons of Norway.

He is survived by many friends in Bremerton, Renton and Denmark. This kind gentleman will be missed by everyone who knew him!

His memorial will be at Miller-Woodlawn 5505 Kitsap Way in Bremerton on Thursday Feb. 5 at 11am.
