Long-time Bremerton schools math teacher Harry Morris Brewer Jr. died Dec. 3, 2006, in Bremerton at the age of 74.
Mr. Brewer was a teacher for 37 years, first in American Falls, Idaho, and then in the Bremerton School District where he taught at Naval Avenue, Coontz, Dewey, West High and East High. He retired in 1993. He was a recipient of the National Science Foundation Fellowship in mathematics and hosted then-Gov. Booth Gardner in his classroom.
Before entering the education field, Mr. Brewer served in the Navy during the Korean War on the destroyer USS Brown.
Mr. Brewer was born on Sept. 27, 1932, in Spokane to Harry M. Sr. and Geneva A. (Kirwin) Brewer. He attended Gonzaga Prep and West Valley high schools in Spokane, graduating in 1951. He received a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Washington University.
He married Carol Jeanne Laycock on April 4, 1959, in American Falls.
Mr. Brewer was a member of the Archdiocese of Seattle School Board, Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Bremerton Elks Lodge No. 1181, Bremerton Lions and the Washington Education Association. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, cooking, lighthouses (which he visited and collected memorabilia of) and his dogs Cissy and Patrick.
A viewing is scheduled for 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 8, at Lewis Funeral Chapel, followed by a rosary at 12:30 p.m. and a funeral service at 1 p.m. An online memorial is available at www.lewischapel.com
Mr. Brewer is survived by his wife, Carol, of Shoreline, Wash.; son Kevin (Bridget) Brewer of Lynnwood, Wash.; sister Dona Neumann of Moses Lake, Wash.; and grandchildren Thomas F., Kevin Jr. and Fallon Brewer, all of Lynnwood.
