Herbert “Russell” Moore of Silverdale died Sept. 24, 2003. He was 78.
He was born to George Earl and Maude (Miller) Moore in Litchfield, Ill. on June 22, 1925.
He married Shirley O’Toole on June 12, 1974.
Moore entered the Navy in May 1943 before earning his GED from North Kitsap High School in 1951.
He served in the Navy and Naval Reserve for eight years. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, receiving the Purple Heart, World War II Victory Medal and the Bronze Star. After being discharged from the Navy, he then spent more than 20 years with the Army National Guard, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton for 33 years before retiring in 1981 as a general foreman.
He loved his children, grandchildren, woodworking and gardening.
Moore is survived by his wife Shirley (O’Toole) Moore of Silverdale; son Alan (Lauriann) Moore of Poulsbo; daughters Linda Leibold of Poulsbo and Colleen (David) Derting of Oak Harbor; stepson Danny (Patricia) O’Toole of Bremerton; stepdaughters Sandy (Bill) Rees of Olympia and Terry Fischer of Bremerton; four sisters of Illinois; 18 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and his first wife Karen (Westerlund) Halverson.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters and his stepfather.
The funeral was held Sept. 29 at Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home in Bremerton. The burial was Sept. 30 at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent.
