Hugh A. Harper, 84
Hugh A. Harper of Poulsbo died Jan. 2, 2005 in Bremerton. He was 84.
Harper was born to Hugh A. Sr. and Florence G. (Burr) Harper on Sept. 18, 1920 in Lancaster, Wis.
He married Patricia Heath and later Diane E. (Morey) Magwire.
Harper graduated from Lancaster High School in Lancaster, Wis. in 1938 and Washington State University in Pullman in 1953. He also attended the University of Wisconsin and the University of Idaho.
He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1942-1945, achieving the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He received two Purple Hearts.
Harper worked as a livestock grazing management specialist for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, as a bird and game biologist for Idaho Fish and Game, and as a biologist for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for 35 years. He retired in 1983.
Harper was a member of the Audubon Society of Idaho and the Wildlife Society in Idaho. He volunteered in studies for the Olympic National Forest and Teton National Park, was a white water river guide in Idaho and served as a volunteer for the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument in Idaho.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Poulsbo.
Harper is survived by his wife Diane E. (Morey) Magwire of Poulsbo; sons Thomas (Hannah North) Harper of Boise, Idaho, Robert (Mickey) Harper of Preston, Idaho and Shawn Magwire of Eugene, Ore.; daughters Luetta “Scootch” Pankonin of Tenants Harbor, Maine and Shannon (Chris) Wood of Poulsbo; brother William Harper of Lancaster, Wis.; sisters Alice Stokes of Logan, Utah and Jean (Robert) Nauman of Lake Oswego, Ore; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Patricia (Heath) Harper; and sisters Dorothy Tucker and Ann Padgett.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Jan. 13 at First Lutheran Church in Poulsbo. A second memorial service will be held in Boise, Idaho at a later date.
Cremation will take place at Cherry Grove Crematory in Poulsbo.
