Joseph G. Akers, 75

Former Poulsbo resident Joseph G. Akers of Sequim died March 10, 2004 in Port Angeles. He was 75.

Akers was born to Carroll E. and Eugenia F. (Hinkle) Akers in Portland, Ore on Oct. 27, 1928.

He married Paulie L. Benson on March 22, 1951 in Portland, Ore.

Akers graduated from Milwaukie Union High School in Milwaukie, Ore. in 1947 and then received his BA from San Jose State University in California in 1966.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1950-1953, achieving the rank of sergeant first class.

Akers worked as a flight engineer for Pan American World Airways for more than five years, then for Lockheed Corporation for 28 years. He retired in 1988 as chairman of the board of directors and general manager of Lockheed International, Ltd. in Taiwan.

He enjoyed learning, reading and mentoring.

Akers is survived by his wife Paulie L. (Benson) Akers of Sequim; son William G. (Shari) Akers of Ferndale; daughters Karen K. (Mark) Austin of Puyallup and Jennifer L. (Mark) Tomas of Marysville; brother David D. Akers of Ward Cove, Alaska; sisters Carol Lee Terp of Big River, Calif. and Karla J. Bell of Mulino, Ore.; and seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Carroll E. and Eugenia F. (Hinkle) Akers and sister Joan F. Creager.

Inurnment will take place at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel of Bremerton.
