Mary Sue ‘Susie’ Brewner-Ford, 79

Mary Sue “Susie” Brewner-Ford died June 28, 2004 in Poulsbo. She was 79.

Brewner-Ford was born to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas B. Owen Sr. in Seattle on Nov. 8, 1924.

She married Tyrus Brewner in 1925. After his death in 1978, she married Raymond Ford in 1991.

Brewner-Ford graduated from Broadway High School in Seattle. She received a bachelor’s degree from Vassar College in New York in 1945 after just three years by attending the University of Washington during her summer vacations.

She worked as a teacher for workers’ children at the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland, Ore. during World War II. When the war ended, she moved to Seattle and taught at Whittier School, as well as schools in Clyde Hill, Medina, Phantom Lake and Rabinswood. She later became a reading specialist, working with special needs children until the end of her 30-year career.

She moved between Poulsbo and Seattle a few times before finally settling in Poulsbo with her second husband in 1991.

She belonged to the educational sorority Alpha Delta Kappa, National Education Association and Washington Education Association. She loved gardening, animals, singing and playing card games like bridge.

Brewner-Ford is survived by her husband Raymond Ford of Poulsbo; stepsons Brent and Brandon; brother Mr. and Mrs. Thomas B. Owen RADM USN; two nephews; and two nieces.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. July 10 at The Stone Chapel in Poulsbo.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to local humane societies or hospices.
