Mervin C. Butterfield died July 11. He was 94.
He was born on Sept. 21, 1916, on the Flathead Indian reservation near Kalispell, Mont. His family traveled to the state of Washington in the early 1920’s. He attended school in Yakima, then at Whitman College and Columbia University Law School. His professional career was primarily with Safeco Life Insurance as manager of the company’s Policy Benefits department. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta, Phi Beta Kappa and Delta Sigma Rho fraternities and a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. He moved to Suquamish Shore with his daughters in 1971.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lucille in 1969. He is survived by three daughters, Cheryl Johnson, Patty Madden (Mark), and Diane O’Hara (Kevin); four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
