Virginia “Gina” Whiteley died Jan. 30, 2008. She was 73.
She was born in Havre, Mont. on Sept. 7, 1934 to Leslie and Alice Mathews.
Mrs. Whiteley attended Washington State University and moved to Seattle in 1953 and was married in 1954. She raised three children and was active in many endeavors: lunch lady and classroom assistant at Suquamish Elementary School; attendance office lady at North Kitsap High School; employed at the North Kitsap Herald, Edgren Insurance, Poulsbo Marketplace, the Suquamish Fire Department and the Buz Whiteley Big Band. She was a Girl Scout leader, high school band booster and trip chaperone and she was secretary for the local landowners organization. She volunteered at the Poulsbo Fishline.
Mrs. Whiteley received the Golden Acorn award, North Kitsap Citizen of the Year award, earned a celestial navigation certificate from the U.S. Power Squadron and performed in many local vaudeville shows and was an accomplished boater. She was an active and loved member of the Faith Episcopal Church in Kingston. Her greatest joy in life was giving of herself to others.
She is survived by her loving husband William “Buz” Whiteley Jr.; son William “Bill” (Vicki) Whiteley III of Poulsbo; daughter Ann (David) Holt of Bainbridge Island; son David (Kathryn) Whiteley of Kenmore, Wash.; and eight grandchildren. She also is survived by her sister Catherine Franklin of Poulsbo.
A celebration of her life is scheduled for 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10 at the Poulsbo Yacht Club. Arrangements by Cook Family Funeral Home.
