Just when you thought there was nothing new to do around town, something unique makes its way into Bremerton.

Summer Movies on the Roof debuts in downtown Bremerton atop — yes on the actual roof — of the former J.C. Penney building. It’s a great throwback to days gone past, not to mention a fun way to enjoy a weekend night in the warm summer breeze.

The fun kicks off next Friday, July 11, with the showing of “Top Gun.” Not only will the showing take you back to a time when “Maverick” and “Iceman” were hip, but it’s free. There will be more showings, featuring different genres the following weekends, but Friday night’s kickoff will be a sight to see with refreshments and a reserved area for pre-1970s model classic cars. It’s not too often someone can say they caught a flick on top of a city building. The public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating so it’s no problem if the kids want to sprawl out.

Summer Movies on the Roof is what building owner Ron Sher and Company calls “the old made new again.” It’s a welcomed event to the downtown area and is exactly the type of gathering that will help ensure the city’s revitalization efforts continue to move forward. Anytime you have a public draw, it’s a benefit to local businesses. It also helps to keep people coming back for more.

It’s great to see that Sher and his crew are working to keep the J.C. Penney building alive. Future plans include a mix of retail shops, restaurants, a grocery store and apartments. Construction plans may still be in the works, but with Summer Movies on the Roof, it’s obvious Sher is moving full steam ahead with future plans for the iconic building.

With the movie not starting until dusk, families can utilize the longer summer day to grab a bite at a local eatery or stroll along the waterfront. We hope this is the start of many more fun activities in downtown and all of Bremerton.
