Democracy may have its flaws, but it sure beats the alternative

I guess you have to give Karen Clay points for being straightforward anyway. Where most liberals disguise their true motives — many even avoiding the term “liberal” altogether — she comes right out in her Aug. 7 Guest Opinion (“Is socialism such a terrible thing?”) and admits what she is and that she doesn’t think democracy is up to the job anymore.

Beyond that, it’s hard to know where to begin taking apart her silly rant.

She blames the current state of economy on greed and arrogance — and I agree. But the greed and arrogance we’re paying for was demonstrated by the bloated, inept government she wants to make stronger.

Moreover, I would also note that the socialist paradises of Europe she so admires are in worse shape economically than we are.

But even more to the point, if Ms. Clay really thinks democracy has outlived its usefulness, our current form of government has a mechanism by which it could be changed.

I would invite her to host a constitutional convention for the purpose of scrapping democracy in favor of socialism, communism, Marxism or any of the other authoritarian forms of government she’d prefer and see how many agree with her.
