Several times a year, Jason and I get the yearning for some live local music. A desire for a Saturday night out on the town, just the two of us, kicking back and enjoying the interactive opportunity of a cold beer, a warm crowd and a hot band.
This past week we chose Brother Don’s on Kitsap Way. Brother Don’s is like a comfortable shoe you can just slip on and relax. Not too big of a place. Nothing trendy or pretentious. The crowd of regulars and groups of less frequent patrons like us are middle aged and mostly well behaved. Just don’t park next door and everything will be just fine and your car should remain where you left it.
The band last week was No Slack Jack and they were pretty dang good. Lots of 80s rock classics with a couple of songs from the 70s and 90s added in. This band played three hours of solid hits with only a couple of breaks and the most amazing part, there was no cover charge to get in.
Local musicians fascinate me. A majority of them are just average Joes during the week, holding down typical mainstream jobs. But on the weekends they get to live out loud what they love, which is performing. Their passion and love for the music pours out in every song and those of us sitting in the audience are the very lucky recipients of their collective efforts.
Bremerton has music available if you are looking for it. Start looking for it. As the weather finally begins to warm, the local music scene starts to heat up. Indoor or outdoor venues and musical opportunities spring up everywhere for all ages and tastes. Check out the local music events this year. Pick the event that is right for you. Have a date night or take the family depending on where it is happening and who is playing.
Show your support for local musicians by coming out and listening. Maybe this year we can all find a little more of the music town in Bremerton after all.
