Now that we are in the month that signals the year as half over already (big groan) I thought I would take the opportunity to update you on some of the things that have occurred regarding several of my past published columns.
Naval Base Kitsap Pass and ID was featured in my May 21 column “Challenges of an average civilian in a military community.” The bad news was the potential emergency I talked about happening in my column actually did occur. The transmission went out on my best friend’s vehicle who lives on base and she was without transportation until I could get a civilian pass to come and go through the Main Gate on my own. The good news is I finally got the pass, without even having to hand over my first born son or any appendages.
With my shiny new pass I have been able to help her and her four kids quite a bit with much needed transportation while her own vehicle is undergoing repairs. A big thanks to her ombudsman and several crew members associated with the boat on which her husband is deployed. They helped to smooth the process considerably. You guys are the best.
If you have not checked out the sports section recently, you should. Central Kitsap Reporter/Bremerton Patriot sports writer Wesley Remmer did a great article on the sport of autocross. The idea for this article came from my column that appeared April 26 titled “Bremerton’s own little slice of racing heaven threatened.” That really is Wes racing my car, which is my daily driver, by the way. He actually proved to be rather good at it for a first timer. I was impressed even when I rode in the passenger seat during one of his runs, yelling, “Gas, gas, gas, break now, turn harder, harder I said, are we driving Miss Daisy here? Hey, you just passed the same gate you have missed the last three runs,” and so on. You get the picture. There is a very specific reason why my license plate frame says, “Minivans are for the OTHER Moms.” My love of cars, racing and my years of participation in grassroots motorsports are that reason.
If you ever see me around town in my car, be sure to wave. All your fingers, please, my 9-year-old is usually with me.
The Smidt family pea patch launched with a big bang after I wrote about it in my “Spring in Bremerton” column dated March 26. Thanks to the unusually cold weather we have had this past month, additional growth has been slow in coming. All in all we are still having a fun time working on it as a family and are most definitely learning a whole lot by trial and error.
Thank you to everyone who reads and enjoys my column. I am having fantastic time writing and interacting with the community that I love through this medium that has been so graciously provided to me. Here is to the second half of 2010 filled with wonderful adventures about Everything Bremerton.
