Pink is the color to wear to tomorrow night’s Kitsap County Fair & Stampede as local residents unite to fight cancer and support a member of the community.

Silverdale resident Wendy Peat, and former co-owner of Café Bella on Fairgrounds Road, was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2008 — but she is not alone in her crusade against the disease. All raffle and merchandise proceeds from tomorrow night’s Tough Enough To Wear Pink event will go to Peat, who has undergone a double mastectomy and chemotherapy and is currently undergoing reconstruction.

“It’s been such a struggle for her physically and mentally,” said event coordinator Linda Foutch. “She really needed the community to embrace her.”

Foutch, a local breast cancer survivor, was the recipient of the Tough Enough To Wear Pink event in 2006 and says the community support “was a wonderful, positive thing.”

While Peat continues to work when she can, the financial assistance will be of great help to the single resident as she continues the fight, according to Foutch.

Donations for Peat have been collected at the Tough Enough To Wear Pink booth inside Thunderbird Arena since Wednesday’s Fair kickoff and are still being accepted through Sunday.

Tomorrow, however, is the community’s chance to show its support for Peat and all those currently in the fight against cancer. Whether you’re male or female, grab your best pink shirt and Wranglers, strap on your boots and head on down to the rodeo. It’s a great event and a wonderful opportunity to support one of our community’s own.
