Giving the Vikes a reason to believe

Hopefully coach Tony Chisholm doesn’t believe in jinxes. If he does, this could pretty much sink him. But he’d agree without risk, there’s no reward so we’re giving him kudos on a job well done only three games into his second season on the hardwood at North Kitsap High School.

Three games? Big deal, right?

Wrong.

Chisholm’s boys basketball team has already surpassed last season’s win record. Given it was a dismal two games, but no doubt the energetic coach just had to dig around a little more in his infamous tool box in order to find the right tool for the job at hand.

Creating winners is a gift of his, ask the girls who followed his lead to three undefeated seasons at Kingston Junior High. Ask anyone who’s ever shared a laugh or a smile with the man.

The Herald received a letter a few weeks back about how quiet the NKHS gym was during basketball games. It’s rocking now. Coach Chisholm is creating a following — fans are taking notice, getting loud and showing their support and school spirit. It’s a grand thing and one that is propelling the Vikes players to perform better.

They’re looking at last year as ancient history and opening a new book that the competition is having a difficult time following. But, win or lose for the rest of the season, the Vikings have already made a name for themselves this year. The Chisholm-led squad has given roundball fans a reason to believe, not just in the five players running the court, but in what they stand for.

Achievement through teamwork. It’s a lesson we should all be so lucky learn.
