It isn’t the building that makes a school, it’s the kids and the teachers.

Jackson Park Elementary, a prime example, is more than just a building. Or even just an old building.

The structure itself is antiquated, inadequate and a bit embarrassing compared to other newer buildings in the Central Kitsap School District.

Students and employees can’t drink the water, it lacks a sprinkler system and can’t easily accommodate advancements in technology.

But it is safe, officials insist, and that’s the most important thing.

And when one considers the struggles across the world to build schools, to keep them from being blown up by fanatics and the luxuries we in this country enjoy and take for granted, Jackson Park is a palace.
