IN OUR OPINION | Chamber should look for quality candidate

An executive director should have personal commitment, practical experience and communication skills.

For the second time in less than 14 months, the Port Orchard Chamber of Commerce has the task of selecting another executive director.

Christine Daniel, a Mason County resident, resigned last month after 13 months on the job. She took over for Coreen Haydock on June 19, 2013.

Coming in, Daniel faced some tough challenges, was unfamiliar with the community and lacked Chamber experience.

The chamber’s Board of Directors has begun its search for Daniel’s replacement.

Board members should look for certain leadership qualifications in its next executive director. They should look for candidates with backgrounds related to the organization and its mission, along with a combination of experience and executive skills.

An executive director should have personal commitment, practical experience and communication skills.

Here are a few suggestions for hiring the next executive director:

• First, select a candidate who has ties to Port Orchard and the South Kitsap community.

• Second, a candidate with chamber experience would be helpful — especially experience dealing with different personalities and worlds of thought.

• Third, select a candidate who can market the chamber and bring in new members. For the chamber to be successful, it needs new members while retaining current members.

• Fourth, select a candidate who has strong public relations skills. The executive director is the face of the chamber.
