The differential between the academic success of white and Asian students compared to those students who identify as ethnic minorities is often referred to as the “achievement gap.”

Central Kitsap High School was recognized by the state last week for helping to close that gap, and much of the credit was given to teachers for their willingness to do some learning themselves.

And for the hard work of the teachers and students of the school, congratulations are in order.

Special recognition should be given to history teacher JD Sweet and English teacher Elizabeth Blandin, whose devotion to students and social justice helped prepare the school’s staff for the challenges of a multicultural educational experience.

The teachers, who are married, have been tireless advocates for students of all ethnicities and backgrounds.

Finally, to the students of Central Kitsap, whose work in the classroom made the difference.

Although it may seem this is just another award adults give each other, you are the real winners.
