As has been stated in these pages before, the Kitsap 9/11 Memorial isn’t for those who remember the day the World Trade Center towers fell in New York.

The purpose of the memorial, to be made from steel salvaged from the site, is to build a connection between future generations and the people who risked their lives to save others.

The Bremerton Parks and Recreation Commission’s recommendation Tuesday that the City Council investigate placing the Kitsap 9/11 Memorial at Evergreen Rotary Park is a great start.

It’s a shame Silverdale couldn’t be bothered to find a visible place for the memorial, despite the fact that its fire department, Central Kitsap Fire and Rescue, led the way. It’s encouraging to know those who worked to have the steel beams brought here from New York haven’t given up.

It’s also encouraging to know that the City of Bremerton will consider placing the memorial in one of its finest parks.

Bremerton has a rich history and a strong sense of community. The memorial would add to that.
