Osprey are fascinating creatures, and they have a place here in Central Kitsap. Specifically, Central Kitsap High School.

The pricey flood light at the school’s practice field, rendered useless for going on a decade because of the raptors’ cozy nest, was bought by taxpayers and it is the district’s responsibility to ensure it works as intended.

It’s understandable why the osprey squatters aren’t atop the district’s to-do list. However, it’s been at least seven years.

A state wildlife expert says osprey nests are a common nuisance, and there are humane, effective and relatively inexpensive ways to deal with them.

While the osprey are away on winter vacation, build a platform above the lights – something that would make a neat wood shop project. The permit to do so is free.

There are public relations risks inherent for even a minor, common sense operation like this.

However, public relations cuts both ways. Next year the district wants taxpayers to approve a tax hike for facilities. It would be a good time for the district to show it can conduct its due diligence and take care of what it has.
