In our opinion: Seabeck Cemetery is a chapter in Kitsap’s history

What lies beneath the salal in Seabeck is a cultural treasure belonging not just to locals, but to Kitsap County. The Seaback Cemetery, likewise, is the responsibility of Kitsap County residents. It is a piece of our history, and it is unfair to allow one person, or one family, the burden of its upkeep.

There is, of course, a dispute brewing between the graveyard’s unofficial caretaker, Fred Just, and the Central Kitsap School District.

More on that matter will come to light in the future, but for now, residents should take the time to see how they can help preserve the historic cemetery for the modern era.

It has been neglected and overgrown.

Goats are needed to help clear the land, for starters.

It has been targeted by vandals, who for some reason take pleasure in damaging relics of our collective heritage.

There is an effort underway to restore the cemetery, identify the graves and repair markers to have it included on a historic site register, thus ensuring it won’t fade back into the brush.
