Entering its 39th year yesterday, Viking Fest has stood the test of time in Poulsbo due to several factors, the biggest one being the town’s deep Norwegian roots. It’s doubtful that tree will ever fall and seeing that the annual festival is tied into Syttende Mai (Norwegian Constitution Day), it will likely continue to branch out and bloom each spring.
Fireworks that burst over Liberty Bay last night brought new flowers to the event that continues to bring a sense of freshness while staying true to its heritage annually.
For those new to the event, “Velkommen.” For those who are returning “Velkommen back.” For those of you who taught Freddie “Boom Boom” Washington, Vinnie Barbarino, Juan Luis Pedro Phillipo de Huevos Epstein and Arnold Horshack in the late ‘70s, “Velkommen Back, Kotter.”
The long-standing event is about bringing people of all ages, races and beliefs together to be Norwegian for a day (or three) after all. It’s also all about having fun.
OK, so maybe watching contestants scarf down five pounds of lye-soaked cod while trying not to purge isn’t your idea of a good time. But if it is, you’re covered.
The lutefisk eating contest aside, the weekend offers everything from all-you-can-eat pancakes to all-you-can-stand carnival rides and everything in between. Oh there’s culture, a fine parade, food aplenty, a race, cultural events, the newly reopened Poulsbo Marine Science Center (thank you, Mr. Austin) and, of course, a Viking or 20.
It wouldn’t be a Viking Fest without those horned helmeted, fur wearing, sword bearing, children scaring ruffians after all right?
So, enjoy the day (or days) and soak up as much fun as you can because it’s gotta last you until 2008. With so many grand things planned, that shouldn’t be hard to do.
Little Norway welcomes you, one and all. Yes, even you Horshack.
