My name is Joy Gjersvold, PO2 Eric A. Gjersvold’s wife. Thank you so much for the time you took to write a story featuring the Navy PECE program (“PECE program bridges gap between teachers, parents” April 24). It means so much, as you have heard, to the sailors and to the members of our community. My husband and I are “late bloomers” to the Navy life. Eric didn’t enlist until a few months before his 32nd birthday, so having lived in this area for many years prior, we see the military life from both sides of the fence. I want you to know that as a military spouse, it means a lot when the community we live in recognizes the time, the sacrifice and the commitment our sailors make to their country, their families, and their communities. I think all too often the assumption is made that as military families, we are only here for a short while and we make little or no contribution to our community. As one of the command ombudsmen for the USS Maine blue crew, I can tell you it brings great pride to see our command and our sailors mentioned in the local print media. Thank you again for writing a great article.
