This week, our collective stomachs sank to our feet when we heard what happened to a local skateboarder in Kingston.
He was skateboarding on South Kingston Road, after dark, and was wearing dark clothing. He was unfortunately hit by a car. He sustained a broken leg in the accident.
Rest assured we are not laying blame on either the skateboarder or the driver. They’ve both been through enough already.
It just seems like events like these — especially on the desolate roads in the North End — warrant a second look.
Here in the Pacific Northwest, we’re not likely to let weather or short days hamper our outdoor activities. If we did, we’d all suffer from delirium brought on by cabin fever.
With that in mind, no matter if it’s raining, snowing, sleeting or hailing, no matter how dark it is outside, there will be someone, somewhere walking/running, riding a bike or skateboarding. That’s a given.
On that note, both those who participate in these activities and those who drive have to remain vigilant year round.
If you’re the one who can’t stand to be in the house for one more minute and head out for some recreation, keep these tips in mind:
•Stay in well-lit areas, if at all possible;
•If that’s not possible, wear bright clothing and/or reflective clothing if at all possible; and
• Carry identification at all times. You never know when you might need it.
For those who drive dark roads at night:
• Drive the speed limit. This will allow for an appropriate response to avoid a collision.
•Expect to see people on the side of the road, and be ready to react appropriately.
Again, we’re not assessing blame, we’re just encouraging vigilance on everyone’s part.
