North Kitsap is the perfect choice to host Babe Ruth World Series

On Tuesday night, one visitor was greeted by a welcome wagon nearly 80 people strong at The Zone Sportsplex in Poulsbo. The visitor, Robert Faherty, national commissioner of Babe Ruth League Inc., got a pretty good taste of the deep love North Kitsap feels for the national pastime.

He was here on a specific mission: To see if North Kitsap could possibly conjure enough volunteer support to host the Babe Ruth World Series in 2012. From community leaders to Little Leaguers, everyone Faherty came in contact with assured him that when a call for volunteerism is put forth, North Kitsap responds in droves.

For a successful tournament — which would actually be played in Central Kitsap, but North Kitsap Babe Ruth would host the event — 250 to 300 active volunteers would have to step up.

All we need is 300 people who love baseball —a pretty easy bill to fill here, where baseball reigns — to step up to the plate, so to speak, to help out.

The series would host 10 teams, each with more than nine players, their families, their checkbooks, cash and Visas. An event like this could be a serious boon to the county’s economy. Kitsap County should do whatever is necessary to host the Babe Ruth World Series.

And we know what will happen: They’ll come, they’ll see and they’ll love the area so much they’ll return again for their family vacations.

The first step, impressing Faherty, is already accomplished.

Now we wait for a decision.
