Port Orchard offers plenty of ways for mothers to be productive

It was a song my dog could have sung, as I yanked him away saying, “No, no, not on this tree. Not on this bush.”

Instead, four lovely young mothers wearing bright sundresses and sandals took the stage at the weekly MOMS Club meeting to sing a variation of the Beatles ballad, “Let it be.”

While clutching crying babies and patting the backs of fretting toddlers they sang out, “Let me pee, let me pee. Oh, please let me pee,” to the crowd’s cheers and laughter.

Ah, what’s a mom to do when she can’t even get bathroom time alone?

The answer the mothers who make up the MOMS Club would give is to join in the fun and laughter.

Their event calendar is crammed with exciting activities that give moms a chance for interaction with other adults and babies, toddlers and small children a chance to socialize.

I was meeting with them to see if they would participate in the Paint the Town kids’ events from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 2.

The open lot that housed a run-down building last year will be walled off and filled with kids’ activities for the whole day for the Paint the Town celebration.

The downtown area has historically been open to murals and a new mural will go up on the outside walls of the adjacent buildings, similar to previous murals, but with a slight difference — it will be educational in nature.

These walls will be covered in a seaside mural that will serve as an outdoor classroom instructing kids (and adults) on the sea life on the nearby beach and in the water. The designers (including Paint the Town’s Delilah) are creating ceramic sea creatures that children can paint.

Unfortunately, as soon as I left the MOMS Club meeting, I broke the fish molds.

I mentioned to someone that, “I killed Delilah’s fish!” and her response was, “No, no! That’s terrible.”

Not real fish, just the molds.

Nonetheless, there will be fish to paint.

What else is there a mom to do?

The adorable Courtney Brown, owner of the Garden Baby Boutique, is offering something unique and special for Aug. 7.

More unique and special than Paint the Town? Well, they’re both special events, especially considering the Orchard Theatre is opening early and offering kids’ movies free on Aug. 2 as a service to the volunteers.

The town will be divided into four painting quadrants – Darryl’s Moondoggies, Team Beautiful, Movie Mavericks and Delilah’s Dream Team.

The movie theater is offering free movie passes to the volunteers of the winning quadrant.

I just saw the amazing Moon there, so there are plenty of good movies to choose from.

Courtney’s event on the Aug. 7 won’t involve getting messy with paints, but it will involve bubbles and hand-designed and crafted children’s clothes. It’s the fourth annual fashion show for the boutique and this year Bubble Man from Seattle is coming.

The event starts with Bubble Man at 11 a.m. on Aug. 7 at the Port Orchard Waterfront Park, followed by a fashion show at the park that showcases unique one of a kind outfits designed by Courtney and Hannah Ridge, a guest designer.

Then there’s a diaper derby race open to babies less than 15 months that’s sure to generate laughter and applause. After which, everyone is invited to the shop for an open house complete with refreshments.

If you have never met Courtney, you need to stop by and meet her. She is not just adorably pretty, she’s talented and kind-hearted.

There’s always a story awaiting you in any shop in Port Orchard. The Garden Baby Boutique is no exception.

Courtney was married and living in Oregon with her husband and two small children. A consummate children’s clothes designer she was awaiting a call to let her know that space for her wares was available in a downtown open market.

By the time the call came, however, she and her family were moving. Her parents, residents of Port Orchard, passed away within six months of each other, leaving Courtney as caregiver for two young siblings.

She and her husband never looked back. They made the move to Port Orchard, where she found a warm and welcoming home amidst other preschool mothers. She never intended to open a store until the kids were raised, but found that there was a market for her hand-designed and sewn clothes.

Her store is unique in that everything she offers is one-of-a-kind.

She even allows kids and their parents to look through pattern books and design their own outfit that she then makes up.

She says that people get nervous when they see the word “boutique” in her title, but she offers clothes far more affordable than one can find in most chain retail shops that are designed and handmade.

She’s quite remarkable and is nearly always working on 10 custom orders at a time.

She can be reached at (360) 874-2323.

What else is there for a mom and her young ones to do? Well, the summer reading program at the library is going strong and open to all kids. Every 10 hours of reading generates a prize, besides that of the reading itself.

The library calendar is filled with events from toddler story times, which my kids always loved to kids’ matinees, pajama story times held on Wednesdays at 7:00 and more. Check it out.

All in all, there are lots of things for a mom to do.

Of course, she’s always welcome to sing.
