The overseers of the capital facilities budget for the North Kitsap School District are tight-fisted, as they should be. In 2001, the voters approved a $100 million bond from which sprang Kingston High School, the North Kitsap Community Pool, upgrades at North Kitsap High and a host of other projects benefitting the students and residents of North Kitsap.

Nearly every school in the district got a piece of this bond, be it through roof repair or major construction.

And there’s money left over but it comes with clarification: The bond money is not part of the general fund, and can only be spent on capital projects.

The district has a hit list of projects: new fire and security systems and new floor for the auxiliary gym at North Kitsap High are possibilities, while work has already begun to replace the track at the North Kitsap Stadium.

But here’s where the district is doing the absolute right thing: it invited the community to guide where the funds should fall. The district listening to the people who approved and are paying for the bond.

Last night, the district hosted a public meeting to hear from the public and will consider the comments before finalizing the list.

It’s the people’s money and the people should have a say. The district is doing the right thing by taxpayers with the bond funds.
