Some observations of a new Poulsbohemian | Editor’s Notebook

It was my first day on the job and I wanted to make a good impression. I was up before dawn. Clothes were pressed. Shoes shined. I was ready for an early breakfast, then in the office by 8. Then, the unexpected happened. My eyeglasses broke.

It was my first day on the job and I wanted to make a good impression. I was up before dawn. Clothes were pressed. Shoes shined. I was ready for an early breakfast, then in the office by 8. Then, the unexpected happened.

My eyeglasses broke. I simply slipped them on and “boing!”, a screw came out and the left lens fell to the ground. My Molly drove on unfamiliar icy roads to the market to get an eyeglass repair kit, but the repair was going to take more expertise than this nearsighted editor with one eyeglass lens could offer. What to do?

Here’s where the thanks begin.

Cassandra at Pacific Eye Care said sure, she could fix my eyeglasses. She had me out the door seeing 20-20 in no time.

Others helped us make our way into town.

Jan at North Kitsap Self Storage was helpful when we finished moving and were ready to turn in our U-Haul truck.

Chelsea and Christy at Liberty Ridge held an apartment for us without a deposit and answered 5,000 questions.

Malia, who works for Sound Classifieds, helped me when I locked myself out of the office, and gave me a tour and introduced me to some of my business neighbors. I now negotiate with ease this big building and its maze of hallways.

And thanks to Mayor Becky Erickson, I know now that I am a Poulsbohemian, not a Poulsbo-ite. (I moved here from Friday Harbor, where locals are San Juanderers.)

Many more have offered assistance, directions and welcome. Thank you.

Maybe they have a good health plan: Four people were enjoying a smoke break the other morning. Outside the pulmonary clinic on 7th Avenue.

This business model didn’t work: Seen on the way to the Edmonds ferry landing, a shuttered business that sold “cheap stuff at low prices.”

Bet they didn’t see those commercials coming: A well-meaning local church invited congregants to watch the Super Bowl at church. The invitation was followed by a discussion about the proliferation of sensuality in our society.

Hope someone kept the remote handy for the commercial breaks.
