What do you do with an old computer monitor?

That old, clunky NEC computer monitor housed in your garage for the better part of a decade now has a place to go. This Saturday, you can take it — and the other electronic equipment gathering dust in your abode — to the Christ Memorial Church parking lot at 18901 8th Ave. in Poulsbo.

That old, clunky NEC computer monitor housed in your garage for the better part of a decade now has a place to go. This Saturday, you can take it — and the other electronic equipment gathering dust in your abode — to the Christ Memorial Church parking lot at 18901 8th Ave. in Poulsbo.

Olympic Printer Resources Inc. of Kingston, EcycleNW of Sequim, Christ Memorial Church, Sound Publishing, Prowse and Company and United Rentals are teaming up for a recycling event. Sound Publishing is the publisher of the North Kitsap Herald and the Kingston Community News, as well as their sister papers — the Bainbridge Island Review, the Central Kitsap Reporter, the Bremerton Patriot and the Port Orchard Independent.

This host of companies in Kitsap County are pulling together resources to solve an ever-growing problem — with technology evolving and consumers buying a new gadget every few nanoseconds to keep up, how can we responsibly dispose of our old toys? The collection event will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Items and their collection fees include televisions, computers and computer monitors, printers, copiers, stereo components, VCR/DVD players, phones, household batteries and cell phones. The fees for collection range from $9 to $44.

Part of the proceeds from this recycling event will benefit the Impact Basque’s Summer in the USA. This program finds families to host Basque students from Spain and France who visit the region in July. The students use the trip to work on their English, immerse themselves in American culture and explore the Christian faith.

“We think this gives people a wonderful opportunity to do the right thing and be green with these old items,” Pete DeBoer, Olympic Printer Resources Inc. founder and president said in a prepared release. “Our company has been about recycling for 15 years. Last year alone we kept 83 tons of plastic and electronic equipment out of landfills with our printer cartridge remanufacturing operations and electronic waste collection efforts. It just makes sense for us to help keep these products from just being thrown away as well as helping out Impact Basque’s ministry program.”

Items collected for recycling will be taken apart, recycled and resold to processors certified to safely handle the components.

An estimated 98 percent of the material collected will be reclaimed and won’t make its way into a landfill, according to the press release.

Now’s as good a time as any to go through your home and collect all those electronic gadgets and dispose of them responsibly.

You’ll rest easier knowing that NEC monitor has gone on to a better life than the one in your cluttered garage.
