TACOMA — The Central Kitsap boys basketball team had a tough go in the Narrows League boys basketball tournament this weekend.
After beginning tourney play Friday with a 61-49 loss to Foss, the Cougars fell again Saturday to Gig Harbor, 69-61.
The end result means CK, which had already locked up a district berth, will travel to Bethel at 7 p.m. tonight in the 4A West Central District III opener, taking on the Braves (14-6).
A win and CK plays the Puyallup-Lincoln winner Friday at 6 p.m. at Puyallup High School. A loss would send the Cougars to Foss High School, where they’d meet up with the loser of the aforementioned contest, also at 6 p.m. Friday.
CK (14-8) did finally get guard Cody Thurmond back, who missed much of the regular season with a broken hand. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to keep CK from two league-tourney losses.
In the opener against Foss, the game was tied 32-32 at halftime but a 10-4 third-quarter advantage for the Falcons gave them an edge in the win. Brandon Durham led CK with 19 points but was the only Coug to hit double-digit scoring.
Against the Tides, CK held Mathias Ward, who scored 56 points against the Cougars earlier in the season, to 20, but Geoff McIntosh had a game-high 29 to lead the Tides to the win. CK trailed by just two at the half, but couldn’t make up the ground in the second half.
Durham led CK with 16 points while Philip Thomas added 15 and Caleb Brown chipped in 11.
Klahowya
The Klahowya Eagles continued to make a mark on the Olympic League standings, upending rivals North Mason 65-58 at home on Friday.
After jumping to a 17-13 first-quarter lead, Klahowya never looked back. Andre Moore, Chris Zumdieck and Caleb Leavitt combined to score all but five of the Eagles points in the win, with Moore leading the way with 25. Leavitt chipped in 19 and Zumdieck scored 16 for the Eagles.
The win tied the Eagles with North Mason for second place among the Olympic League’s 2A teams at 8-6 in league play.
The Eagles traveled to Bremerton last night but results were unavailable at press time. Klahowya closes out the season Friday when the Eagles host Peninsula.
Regardless of how either team finishes, both will advance to the 2A West Central District tourney.
