“Vikings top both PA and Bainbridge POULSBO – It was a big win, and it came at the only home meet of the season. The North Kitsap High School gymnastics team beat both Bainbridge Island and Port Angeles High School in a three-team meet Thursday night, scoring the highest team score that coach Kris Goodfellow can remember – 149.85. The win was also special because of the location: Trek Gymnastics in Poulsbo. It was North’s only home meet this season (the next is at Bainbridge Island). The win came on the back of strong individual performances from the Vikings. Anne Atkinson took second all-around, and Lyida Moore followed up with third place. In specific events, Atkinson took third in beam, Moore took fifth, and Tonia Bertsch took sixth. In vault, Moore topped Atkinson, taking first with a score of 8.6; Atkinson took second with 8.5. On the bars Atkinson took first, and Vikings Monica Anderson and Lydia Moore took fifth and sixth. And in the floor routine, Atkinson and Moore took first and second, and Kaitlin Giles tied for sixth. To Bainbridge Island’s credit, coach Goodfellow said after the match, their top two gymnasts were not participating that evening. I think that really helped us, she said. But that doesn’t mean she’s less proud of the team. They did really well. It’s very exciting, Goodfellow said. Since the team’s last meet, she said, the Vikings raised their team score by 7 points – an impressive achievement. Goodfellow especially liked the way the team’s floor routines had improved. North Kitsap will again face Port Angeles and Bainbridge Island, along with a third team from Ballard, at Bainbridge Island High School on Jan. 26. That meet will begin at 7 p.m. “
